Nothing can be more appreciated to have a group of people with the high spirit of learning trying to enhance their communication vitamin level.   It was the coldest night.  Nevertheless, we still got together.  I was actually very touched.

Scott opened the meeting with a bowl of instant noodles as if that was a normal ritual.  It was relaxed and cozy.  We took turn to read and let the discussion hone our curiosity.  We only covered one question on the discussion list; however, we all felt satisfied.   One great value of smaller group is that we have more time to speak English.  That's why we have the study group, isn't it? The topic led us to review the interaction with our company and within ourselves.  An interesting topic to ponder.
For adding more value, I kept the note when member encountered the difficult usages.  Please see the following graph.

007 How much are you worth?

One thing I learned from the meeting was " Never judge the book from its cover.(不要以貌取人)"  I can only say the meeting was surprises after surprises.   Before the meeting, I was a little worried that the article might contain too many technical words and the form of the aurora was too difficult to understand. BUT......
First of all, Eason explained how aurora is formed in plain English.  That was quite surprising.  And more, what Eason said was clear to the audience.  It seemed like our understanding of the universe was upgraded.  Was it because of Eason's charm or his clear description?
I would say in our group, members feel comfortable to practice English.
Secondly, I also learned that never set limits.  In the World Cafe Discussion, one team was assigned to talk about "going through the wall".  At the very beginning I doubted that team could have solid result.  But their result amazed me - " Out of body experience", " Magic", and "Ghosts". Thanks Scott to facilitate the discussion well.  I can only say the members' potential is incredible.
I look forward to a fantastic meeting next time.

討論文章連結:The story of aurora(有些字平常不會用到,了解中文就好不用記,有的我幫你查了。)

It was like having a great feast with your lovely family members in a very special evening.  Typhoon was approaching in that evening and of course, it was raining and windy.  Nevertheless, members still come to the meeting.  I am overwhelmed.  More touchingly, our master of the evening, Peggy Cheng, brought us the Chinese fortune cookies, the one that you can only enjoy in American Chinese restaurant.  Well, I have to say Peggy, you gave us the FIRST experience to sample the Chinese fortune cookies in Taiwan.  It was indeed a special experience.
Peggy not only prepared the food but also had a good try on the program design.  I enjoyed the conversation bouncing around the table.  Agreement is good, but disagreement is also good. What I enjoy the program is people learn from the disagreement.
Our first time comer, Jennifer, said that she enjoyed the atmosphere.  That makes her not as nervous as she imagines.    Well, nice try!!   The ultimate objective is to stimulate the different thinking through the discussion of English articles.  Being about to think differently is POWER.
Two suggestions that Dawn raised and were agreed by the member:
1. Dawn will collect the fee and donate to the charity.
2. At least to give meeting master two months lead time to organize the article.  So December Meeting Master - Shyvia, and January Meeting Master - Scott.

Today we had two special guests, long lost friends, Scott and Whitney.   It's good to see them back, especially Scott has been in the process to turn himself into 潮男.   We missed two members today - Eason and Karen.  But we appreciate Eason's spirit of virtual participation.  He was on his way coming back from  Chiayi to Taipei.  Welcome to the next meeting then.
The meeting started with a psychological test which perceived our relationship  to spouse, children and money.  That was a great warm up session, participants grouped up to share their own feeling.  It warmed up everyone's English speaking tongue.  The discussions also led the participants to be more insightful when linking with others.  Lea wanted us to put ourselves into the shoes of the roles in the article.  This story was simple, but profound.
We had been educated to be better, stronger, and tougher to meet higher goals.  This story didn't meet any of  those goals, but uplifted the humanity to a higher ground.   If it happened in the work place, we would be under the risk to be fired.  But I am sure there must be some parts in our job that allow us to bring a smile to people we work with. If we have the chance, do it.
Having said that, why it is important to bring people a smile? It is an invisible credit card.   The limit of the credit depends on our attitude toward others.

I want to thank Lea for her efficient feedback on the donation.  She has already applied for the donation. On Friday, I did meet the staff from 華山文教基金會selling sweat potato.  I bought two immediately.  Only $20 each.  I guess I will keep on doing this in the next encounter.

Something worth learning in this article:
  • punch line
  • the sense of belonging
  • S+ struggle over  to +N
  • a broad smile
  • grinning from ear to ear

Note :

004 Two Choices

This meeting deserved to win a milestone because of its philosophical meaning.  The wording itself was easy but the zig-zag thinking  indeed gave our brain a stir.  Discussing such topic in English was like the mission impossible.  Nevertheless, WE DID IT.
The other thing touched me was most member tried hard to escort their own belief.  I can say everyone stood for their feet.  It was like a debate, but a gentle one.  I am happy because sometimes it is easy for Taiwanese to be talked into others' belief. Just because our education wants us to FOLLOW the book, the teacher and the authority.  However, I do believe the rich creativity hidden inside our Taiwanese brains. We should dig it out.  When we dig it out, we will find our confidence.

The video clips Shawn played in the meeting:
1. An adaptation of Plato's allegory in clay ( source from Youtube) Please see below.
2. Are you a brain in a vat? ( source from Youtube) Please see below.

Some terms that we talked about in the meeting and the terms I like
  •  prophet 先知
  • Ignorance is a bless. // Ignorance is bliss.
  • accustom to for so long =get used to for so long=長久習慣

002 Meeting Minutes

Date : 7/15
Topic: Why sleep is so important?
Participants: Nancy, Eason, Karen, Shown, Peggy, Lea and Dawn. What a lucky seven!!

This was the first time that students should have taken the lead to host the meeting.  Sammi prepared everything.  She even asked me to correct her script.  However, she was tight up by a test.  She asked Johnson to take over her role.  Nevertheless, couple of hours before the meeting, I got the text message from Sammi that Johnson had a diarrhea.  Johnson also called me to apologize.   Anyhow the meeting went well because of the enthusiastic participation from the members.

The discussion was excellent.  We know the tips to upgrade to business class when taking the flight. We also know Nancy's sleeping secrete.  Peggy reveal Shawn's sleeping habits.  And Shawn has shown his magic power to listen to the heavy metal music and sleep at the same time.  Lea popped out ideas immediately when asked to point out what caught her eyes from the article.

  • The next lead master : Shawn ( Shawn, please provide the article by next Thursday.)
  • Total collection: $1400 ( $700 venue fee and Karen will help to donate the rest of $700 to the animal shelter.  Thank you Karen!!)
  • Next meeting : 8/19 Thursday

I guess everyone is busy in some ways.  But I also heard someone said that time is just like women's cleavage.  It is squeezable!!

Special appreciation to Eason's  visit.  He just cam back from a trip and came directly to the meeting. He also invited his wife to join.

I had a great sleep last night because we did something good together.  The animals are smiling, too.
